Editor Interview with Cassandra Harris
How did you become an editor?
I started my journey in the world of books as a book illustrator, collaborating closely with authors to bring their stories to life visually. This hands-on experience gave me a unique perspective on storytelling. As I collaborated extensively with authors, reading their manuscripts and suggesting changes, I came to realize my love for not just visualizing stories, but refining them through words. So, I transitioned from illustration to book editing, and it has been a fulfilling journey ever since.
What kind of editing do you do? And will you work with a client who asks for the kind of editing you don't normally provide?
My expertise lies in the art of developmental editing, a careful process that involves diving deep into a manuscript's architecture. This includes shaping plot intricacies, nurturing character development, ensuring narrative flow, and enhancing overall coherence. However, I also offer copyediting and proofreading services to ensure the final product is polished.
While my core strength lies in developmental editing, I remain open to clients' unique needs. If a client seeks a different editing approach, I welcome the opportunity to discuss how I can best serve their vision or, if necessary, recommend a colleague with expertise in that specific style of editing.
What editing tools do you feel are the most helpful?
Although, I don't believe in AI tools, my editing toolkit combines established industry tools with advanced software to achieve the best results. Microsoft Word is my go-to platform for conducting detailed edits, for spell checks, and for correcting punctuation mistakes. Grammarly is the most recommended. These tools, when combined with my seasoned experience, allow me to fine-tune manuscripts while preserving the distinct voice of each author.
What are the most common mistakes you see?
In my extensive experience, I've identified recurring patterns in manuscripts that require attention. Consistency, for instance, is a challenge that often arises. Whether it's maintaining uniform character traits, timelines, or writing style, ensuring coherence throughout the narrative is crucial. Moreover, achieving the right pacing—balancing engaging action, meaningful dialogue, and evocative description—can be challenging. Naturally, the occasional typos and grammatical errors surface, but these are expertly addressed through my careful review process.
Which books do you feel are helpful to writers who want to write better?
In this book world, whether you are an author or an editor like me. You will look up to this trio to elevate your craft, and this trio of literary gems has proven invaluable to aspiring writers. Stephen King's On Writing stands as a masterful insight into the writing process from a seasoned storyteller. For precise guidance on grammar and style, The Elements of Style by Strunk and White is an indispensable resource. Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird resonates profoundly with writers, offering not just practical advice but also a wellspring of inspiration to fuel their creative journey.
How do you handle a situation where a client often asks questions or argue your edits were done on their work?
Open communication is key. I welcome clients' questions and concerns, as it shows their dedication to their work. It's an opportunity for a productive dialogue where I take the time to thoroughly explain the reasoning behind my suggestions. By showcasing how my edits enhance the manuscript's overall quality and impact, I foster a collaborative environment that respects the author's vision while elevating the book's potential.
Who doesn't appreciate freedom, even though I really believe in offering the best and am available to answer clients' queries and address their concerns? Therefore, the author of the children's book I am currently working on is my perfect customer. Because she isn't disruptive with my business and lets me handle the problems how I see fit, I refer to her as my ideal client. Even if she finds something, she first asks for suggestions rather than attempting to make any adjustments without consulting me. She grants me the independence that I cherish, in my opinion.
What should a client expect when working with you as their editor?
Engaging in a partnership with me as an editor promises a dynamic journey of refinement and growth for both the manuscript and the author. I'll provide thorough, constructive feedback to elevate their manuscript. This encompasses not only the macro aspects like plot and character development but also the nuanced micro elements that contribute to a captivating read. Together, we refine the narrative, intensify its emotional resonance, and ensure that the final product captivates and leaves a lasting impact on readers.
What do you do in the event that you feel the client’s work needs more in-depth editing than what they have asked for?
When I sense the potential for deeper enhancements within a manuscript, I initiate an open and honest conversation with the client. We assess the specific areas that could be improved and explore the potential benefits of a more comprehensive editing package. By finding the right balance between the author's goals and the book's needs, we collaboratively decide on the optimal editing approach. This ensures that the work receives the meticulous attention it deserves to reach its fullest potential.
Do you negotiate your rates?
You pay for the quality you want. I firmly believe in fair compensation that reflects the value I bring to the table. However, I'm also flexible to the diverse budget considerations of potential clients. In the spirit of collaboration, I remain open to discussing rate options that align with both the client's needs and the project's scope. Ultimately, transparency and finding a win-win solution are always my goals in these discussions.
